Will Elliott and Clay Koweek

So right before snap.fm got shut down for the summer (thank you economy) we traveled to Tucson to bathe in the south western sun. While we were there, we met up with Mr. Will Elliott and Mr. Clay Koweek under the unrelenting Tucson sun we captured what was the last of the 2009 snapbox’s. I remember sweating, while sitting still. I remember the lens flare. I remember sunglasses out of necessity.

I had heard Will Elliott and J. Clay Koweek play at various events around Tucson a couple times before meeting Will through a mutual friend. My first real emersion into their music, however, was after I had asked Will to write some music for a short film I was making. He agreed, so long as Clay could play with him. Will and Clay have been playing together for about four years now and when you see them perform together you can sense just how natural they are jamming off one another. I went over to their place to hear what they had been tinkering around with for my movie and ended up sitting around with them in the backyard as they improvised different guitar sounds and playing styles; sliding, strumming and plucking on old tunes they had been playing together for years.

I wanted to shoot Will and Clay for snapbox because I think of them as musicians that embody Tucson’s independent music scene. You can see both of them playing all around town with a wide variety of musicians. The two of them play everywhere from their own backyard, The Red Room downtown, or where ever they happen to find themselves with their guitars. I don’t know if it’s the fact that they play around town so often, if it’s their sound, or their penchant for the occasional cowboy hat, but their music embodies Tucson to me. A single guitar chord played by their two guitars brings up mental images of the most nostalgic Tucson scene.

Snapbox shot them on a day that couldn’t be more perfect for Tucson music (or rather, more atmospherically appropriate, since the heat was less than perfect for the guitars). It was a hot, 100-degree afternoon on their front porch right after Clay returned from performing on tour with fellow Tucson musician Marianne
Dissard (http://www.myspace.com/mariannedissard) and right before Will left for Maine for the summer. For the next few months Will is hanging out in Maine while Clay is gallivanting around on tour before he eventually meets up with Will in the Northeast. Until then you can hear more of Will’s music performed with Clay at http://www.myspace.com/willelliotttucson and hear more of Clay’s music by finding a quiet spot in the city and listening carefully to the wind.

Team B (plan C)

We only got one song finished with Team B before they had to return for sound check. Boston decided to rain that day, so we couldn’t shoot outside. We got booted from our backup location. So it was time for plan C, which didn’t leave us much time.

You Can Be A Wesley played a show at Matt Murphy’s about a month ago. They managed to cram everyone in and we managed to record it. It was a last minute job but they still managed to sound good.

Crosscut Saw (Tucson, AZ)

There is something enjoyable about watching someone that good play a guitar. Its the opposite of schadenfreude. Clark and his father are that good.

Crosscut Saw’s practice space is a den of bluesy goodness. It’s also very dark. The band is best viewed in a similar such “bar” setting with plenty of cigarette smoke and drinks involving whiskey.

The Heligoats

We finally got a slate. It’s a little small and it looks like a toy, but it does the job. We had planned on doing this at sunset but we lost a little too much light. Instead we got a zipcar, setup in a nice parking lot near by and did our thing.

Big Digits

When you put someone in front of a camera, it’s amazing how they become anxious or nervous. Ask them to perform and it’s even worse. These three songs are on the second run through and I wish we could show you the first run. The juxtaposition of energy is huge. We had planned on doing this outside, but we were foiled by Boston weather once again. Regeneration Tattoo definitely saved us.

If you ever get the chance, see Big Digits live. I really like what we produced with them, but their live show is a spectacle of jazzercise like energy fused with quote/unquote mad beats.

Young Mothers (from Tucson, AZ)

I think of Tucson as a small town, but that’s not really true. It’s got all the characteristics of a small town… No real highway, small downtown area, suburbia to the max. Even the way I came to Young Mothers, a friend of a friend of a friend, makes me think of small town.

At first attempt we tried to shoot this outside. In Tucson you do everything outside, eat, drink, recreational drugs, why not play some music. With fading light we were forced into the yellow confines of the living room. Sometimes I wish we could always shoot in front of a mirror (see brodsky post) so that we could reveal the silent audience. They sit so quiet and small, drawing the envy of every kindergarten teacher.

Also stand up bass is my new favorite instrument.

Brodsky part 1

We waited and waited in the parking lot of a stop and shop in Somerville for our talent to show up – amusing ourselves with a small rubber bouncy ball. Steve finally shows up on his bike and we hop the fence to a graveyard next door, trying to beat the now waning sun. We worked as quickly as we could to set-up, but managed to only get through one song before it was too dark for our cameras. In many ways, this was a blessing in disguise. We were now unconstrained by daylight or a band needing to get back for a sound-check, a luxury we never had before. In the end, I think this is one of our most successful shoots. The sound quality came out great and because we were not pressed for time, we managed to use the large, harshly lit room covered in mirrors to our advantage. This shoot perfectly exemplifies our hand-held, on the fly shooting style, as the three camera people make cameos throughout the videos, whether it’s our reflection in the mirror or someone almost not turning on their camera.
